When the bulb is the piece
Most pendants hide the bulb. A shade diffuses, a frame hangs, and the source of the light stays invisible. A small category of pendants does the opposite. The shade is thin or clear, and the bulb is what you see.
When the shade hides nothing
Bare-bulb and clear-shade pendants change the math. The bulb is no longer a consumable, a thing you replace and forget. It is the centerpiece. What you pick matters visually, not just functionally.
Shape over everything
A globe, a teardrop, a long tube, or a classic A-shape: the silhouette is the first decision. A globe reads soft and domestic. A long tube reads modern and architectural. A filament shape (ST64, T10) reads warm and slightly vintage.
The shape lives inside the pendant for the life of the fixture. Commit to it the same way you would to a finish or a color.
Filaments visible, or not
LED filament bulbs mimic the look of incandescent. A row of visible spiral or straight filaments inside a clear envelope. They give bare-bulb pendants their warmth and their era.
Standard LED bulbs with a frosted or coated interior do not show anything. They work fine in diffused shades, where the light matters and the bulb does not. In a clear shade they read flat and industrial in a way that is usually not the goal.
Lower lumens, not higher
When the bulb is exposed, glare is the risk. A 1000-lumen bulb that would be invisible behind a shade becomes uncomfortable to look at directly. For bare-bulb pendants, aim for 400 to 800 lumens per bulb. Pair the pendant with a dimmer if you want more flexibility.
2200K to 2700K is the usual range for filament bulbs. Anything cooler reads wrong and kills the warmth the shape was meant to create.
Replace it, but not quietly
The bulb in a bare-bulb pendant has a shorter moment of being overlooked. When it burns out, the fixture stops working on two levels: as a light, and as an object. Keep spares. Keep the shape and the temperature consistent every time you swap.
A pendant where the bulb does the work
Our Horta pendant has a clear, lightly tinted glass shade that exposes the bulb inside. It is built for a filament-style LED at 2700K and 500 to 700 lumens. The fixture itself is quiet, and the choice of bulb is what gives the room its character. Browse pendants and ceiling lights for more.
